Worrying rumors about the announced but not yet released Nintendo Switch versions of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption have surfaced.
The remastered edition of the first Metroid Prime installment was released just a week ago (Nintendo made it available on the eShop as a surprise during the Nintendo Direct on February 8), and it’s turned out to be a fair enough remaster. It’s not perfect, but it’s served its purpose well, with a visually strong update to Samus Aran’s first-person adventure, originally released for Nintendo GameCube in the fall of 2002. But what about the other two games? After all, it had been rumored for years that the Metroid Prime Trilogy revamp was essentially done, and Nintendo had put them away for later…
Jeff Grubb, writing for VentureBeat, said last year that the other two parts of the trilogy would see the light of day on the Nintendo Switch, and while they were a bit darker in tone, they were still suitable products. “Metroid Prime 1 — my understanding is that’s getting the big remaster treatment, and Metroid Prime 2 and Metroid Prime 3 are… they’ll probably get updated controls and things like that, but they’re not getting quite the same overhaul that Metroid Prime 1 is getting,” Grubb said last year.
He was recently asked about it on Twitter. To this day, he stands by his statement, but this could lead to an interesting situation: compared to the first part, the second and third will essentially only get the bare minimum (more alternative control schemes), which is more than nothing, but it could be a slight disappointment for fans of the franchise, as it could show Nintendo that they don’t have that much faith in Metroid Prime 4…
It’s not official yet, of course, but if Retro Studios’ other two games only get a minimal overhaul on the Nintendo Switch, which is slowly being prepared for its successor, then we wouldn’t dare to trust Metroid Prime 4 too much.
