MOVIE NEWS – Stranger Things is coming to an end with the upcoming fifth season, and David Harbour says it’s the right decision.
Stranger Things star David Harbour feels it’s time for the hugely popular Netflix series to end. Which is fortunate because the series will end with its upcoming fifth season. Speaking to Discussing Film, Harbour explained why he thinks now is the time to leave Hawkins behind. This would allow himself and the rest of the cast – many of whom have grown from children to adults during the series’ run – to pursue other projects.
“What’s funny is when I started the show, I never ever wanted it to end. That’s why I love the show. I think it’s a great show, even if I wasn’t in it. Now we’re almost nine years from filming the first season, and I think it is time for it to end. But it is, of course, very bittersweet. You know, there’s a sadness there. But also, we’ve all grown up. It is time for us to leave that nest and try other things and different projects. And to let the Duffer Brothers try different things as well. I mean, those guys are so talented. I want to see what they come up with next. So it is bittersweet, but it’s definitely time.”
Harbour isn’t the only Stranger Things cast member who thinks ending the series with Season 5 is necessary: Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike on the show, feels the same way.
“I just want to help finish it off, but not in a way of I want to be done with it. It’s just like I want to know what happens. I’m definitely sad about it, but also, I know that it’s the next kind of chapter of everyone’s life that needs to happen.” Wolfhard even called the idea of Stranger Things continuing beyond season 5 “ridiculous”, adding, “I think the Duffer brothers figured out, I would imagine, a perfect ending in five.”
For now, it remains a mystery as to what Stranger Things’ fifth and final season will contain. But it has been revealed that the story will focus on Noah Schnapp’s Will Byers. “Will’s going to be a big part and focus, is really all I can say of Season 5, in his journey,” revealed Stranger Things co-creator Matt Duffer. “We’re starting to see his coming of age, really. This has been challenging for several reasons, some of which are supernatural. But you’re starting to see him come into his own.”
Filming for Stranger Things season, 5 is expected to begin in May 2023.
