Could HBO Max Scrapped Their Rumoured True Blood Reboot?!

MOVIE NEWS – After the latest announcement from HBO Max head Casey Bloys, it looks like the main characters in the True Blood reboot won’t be drawing much blood…

Fans of True Blood have been eagerly awaiting news of the planned reboot of the series. The project was first announced in 2020. However, it seems that no viable script for the series has emerged in the last three years. So the vampire drama revival is now a foregone conclusion for the foreseeable future. Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO and content provider HBO Max, spoke to Variety about the future of the shows, and it looks like this is one revival that won’t be happening anytime soon.

Back in February last year, Bloys gave a promising update on the rumored reboot, noting that while he “doesn’t want to give the impression that anything is close to [getting the green light],” there were “several versions” of the project in the running.

In his latest update, while not saying the project would never materialise, Bloys said it was “not in the deck” at the moment as there was “nothing that felt like it had gotten that far”.

True Blood is just one of several series that have been rumoured to return to HBO along with Six Feet Under. However, it seems that among the many other changes that have landed on HBO and HBO Max recently, other priorities are currently in place.

The most significant changes have been around the DC franchise. Several series and movies have been cancelled at various stages of production. While fans are still not entirely over the collapse of the Snyderverse, the last six months have been further traumatised by the scrapping of Batgirl. Then there’s the loss of more Superman projects with Henry Cavill and the complete overhaul of the DCU’s future. While that future now seems to be taking shape, with the first set of new DCU projects already being actively negotiated and developed, there is still a long way to go before the DCU can be called a “stable ship”.

As for HBO’s other productions, there’s House of the Dragon, for example, which is heading into its second season with a 2024 premiere in mind, and there are still several Game of Thrones spin-off series actively in the works.

Recent attention has been focused on new series The Last of Us, which is getting a second season, and the much-criticised animated series Velma, which despite having one of the lowest critical scores of all time on IMDb, is still rumoured to be in the pipeline for a second season.
