The original Resident Evil 4, released first on Nintendo GameCube and then on essentially all consoles, has been juxtaposed with the 2023 remake in a comparison video. The results look promising.
Since the Resident Evil 2 remake, Capcom has mostly figured out how to remake the older installments of one of the most iconic franchises in the survival horror genre. (They did the first one on GameCube, so only a cross-gen remaster came out nearly eight years ago.) The third installment remake wasn’t bad, but Capcom got more criticism for its lack of content. The remake of the fourth installment will be the focus of attention because it was with this game that the franchise switched to more fast-paced gameplay (or an over-the-shoulder camera view).
ElAnalistaDeBits’ comparison video is embedded below, and in it, several locations are juxtaposed, from the Salazar mansion to underground tunnels to Leon S. Kennedy’s encounter with Jack Krauser. There is an indescribable difference between the two visions of the game. It has to be said that, despite being released in 2005, the original Resident Evil 4 can still hold its today. It doesn’t look that bad. The remake is similar to the original in the castle. Still, the map layout has been modified for the 2023 edition, and the atmosphere is significantly more substantial thanks to modern lighting. The caverns are very different, with new puzzles, enemies, cool water effects, and excellent lighting.
The encounter with Krauser has been modified, of course, because the QTEs made it necessary to restart a few times in the original. However, Capcom hasn’t used them in the remake, but some of the scripted scenes still seem to refer to the 2005 original, so there’s a balance between the two concepts to give us an exciting and dramatic experience.
Resident Evil 4 Remake will be released on March 24 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, and PlayStation 4. It’s almost sure that the Capcom broadcast, set for March 9, will include this game.
