According to rumors, the successor to the Nintendo Switch doesn’t entirely run the games made for the Switch as it should.
In this video from ModernVintageGamer (from now on, we’ll abbreviate it to MVG), formerly of Nightdive Studios and now mainly focused on YouTube, we hear what he thinks is going on with the big N’s next platform. It’s in the works, as the Switch has been on the market for six years, and it usually takes 7-8 years for a console generation change. According to MVG, if Nintendo abandons the Nvidia Tegra X1 chip (seen in the Nvidia Shield Android TVs from 2015 to 2018), then current Switch games won’t work on the new hardware, at least not without recompiling the games’ code for the latest technology.
According to MVG, Nintendo could bridge this problem with software emulation, as it is how Xbox and Xbox 360 games can efficiently run on the Xbox Series. However, the new N hardware would have to be significantly more powerful. With Steam Deck (which easily outperforms the Switch) also struggling with Switch emulation, it won’t be easy. He thinks Nvidia and Nintendo will have to make it compatible with the Tegra X1 chip, but it is not currently supported.
The other solution is something that Sony already did with the early PlayStation 3: simply have Nintendo put a Tegra X1 chip in each new console (the early PS3 had the Emotion Engine chip, so PS1 and PS2 games were supported on the console). Nintendo did it with the Wii, which had the GameCube chipset in the hardware! However, it would increase the production cost of the hardware, and for physical games, either a Nintendo Switch cartridge slot would be needed, or the new hardware would have to use the same cartridges. There is also the possibility of next-gen patches. Since rumors are swirling that there will be a Pokémon Scarlet/Violet patch for the new big N hardware, it sounds realistic. Since it was brought up by the same person who gave precise details on the DLC content and new Pokémon before the Pokémon Presents broadcast, there may be something to it.
It is all unofficial.
