TECH NEWS – Fortunately, only the processor gets more utilization on one manufacturer, but the other is not so lucky.
Let’s start with the example that’s not so bad (unless you’re using a weaker processor): Nvidia has confirmed that a bug in the GeForce driver causes at least 10% CPU load after exiting games, and that it can be worked around by, by reverting to an older version, or if you are lazy (or maybe patient), you can also disable the Nvidia Container process from the task manager (it will be conspicuous in its CPU usage, so it will be easy to find).
AMD’s situation is far worse. In a worst-case scenario, it could send our Windows installation to the digital graveyard, but that’s not AMD’s fault, as the latest two Adrenalin (February 23.2.1 and the current 23.2.2) drivers have been green-lighted by Microsoft. But if that’s all there was to it: PC World editor Brad Chacos was worse off, as he (and other Radeon owners) were unfortunately caught in the middle by Microsoft’s incomprehensible move to update Windows now, whatever happens. To do this while installing AMD’s driver is most unfortunate and damaging… And after the reboot comes the endless boot-blue death cycle because of it.
The AMD solution is to uncheck Factory Reset for the new driver. If the problem has already happened, press the power button repeatedly during boot between BIOS and the start of Windows loading to start the automatic recovery. System recovery is needed, not startup repair (it makes the situation worse).
“We have reproduced an issue that can occur in a minimal number of instances if a PC update occurs during the installation of AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, and we are actively investigating. We recommend users ensure all system updates are applied or paused before installing the driver and that the “Factory Reset” option is unchecked during the AMD driver installation process. We are committed to resolving issues as quickly as possible and strongly encourage users to submit issues with AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition via the Bug Report Tool,” AMD said in a statement.
How embarrassing.
