TECH NEWS – Apple may have been overly optimistic about its yet-to-be-officially unveiled device.
Apple’s products are expensive, but for its augmented reality headset (supposedly codenamed Reality Pro), the company might be asking a premium price, with rumors suggesting that between $3,000 and $5,000 will be charged for the limited-edition product. An earlier estimate indicated that Apple could have around 1 million units this year. Still, according to Ross Young, founding CEO of DSCC (Display Supply Chain Consultants), a display specialist, Apple can’t build up such a large inventory in its current situation.
Young wrote on Twitter that the initial supply figure is too high. Instead, he didn’t give a specific number but explained why it should be in the six figures: Apple’s unnamed supplier can’t produce enough microLED panels in 2023. Chances are that Apple will rely on just one company (as it relies on Luxshare for manufacturing), which will then reach the limits of its capacity, so it will have to upgrade its factories, or Apple’s supply chain will have to expand.
Another consequence is that Apple will have to pay more for fewer displays, which could justify the possible price of the device. However, we are already hearing that the tech company is already working on a second version and that the successor should be cheaper than the first, which has not yet been unveiled and whose mass production will be overseen by Foxconn. Foxconn will also provide an automation process to improve production performance at a lower cost, allowing more units to be delivered in a calendar year.
So far, it sounds good, but Apple has yet to introduce its AR headset. The company MUST do it within a few months. Otherwise, we don’t see much chance of it being available this year.
