Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has explained why Ellie, known from the Last of Us games and series, will not be a guest fighter in Mortal Kombat 12.

Fans should not expect to see Ellie from The Last of Us as a unique guest fighter in Mortal Kombat 12. Series co-creator Ed Boon has now revealed why. After nearly two full years of rumours and speculation, Mortal Kombat 12 was finally confirmed by parent company Warner Bros Discovery during its quarterly earnings call late last month.

One of the many speculations surrounding Mortal Kombat 12 is what special guest stars might join the franchise’s protagonists, like Scorpion and Liu Kang, on the blood-soaked battlefields.

Since the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot, developer NetherRealm has brought in-game, comic book and movie characters from outside the MK universe. The likes of Kratos, the Predator and even John Rambo. Fans are already making a wish list of guest fighters for Mortal Kombat 12. Boon is often asked if he’d bring in brutal legends like John Wick and John Constantine. Or even the nameless Doom Guy.

However, the co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series has now confirmed that at least one popular video game character will not be making the transition to the brutal world of Mortal Kombat 12: Ellie Williams from Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us series. When asked about Ellie’s guest starring in MK 12, Boon quickly shot down the idea. He said he would not want the Mortal Kombat franchise’s signature Fatalities to be performed on her. Of course, Boon may have been joking with his response, as he’s known for his playful way of engaging with fans online.

But Ellie is no stranger to brutal violence: in both the games and the series, she can occasionally be seen beating her way out of seemingly impossible situations.

On the other hand, it’s easy to understand why Boon and other gamers can’t stomach bloody execution-style moves on such a beloved character. Especially in light of how young Ellie is in the Last of Us games. Fans must wait and see what guest stars might appear in Mortal Kombat 12.
