While it’s common for Microsoft to remove games from its subscription service after a certain period, this one game created a somewhat unusual situation.
Usually, the Redmond tech giant’s subscription system usually receives two monthly updates. That’s when games arrive on Xbox Game Pass and leave. As such, the offering is usually a varied selection of games (including internally developed Xbox Game Studios titles, which are all on the system from day one of their releases, offering a different approach to rival PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium) but updated frequently. That doesn’t sound bad, of course.
While Microsoft has yet to announce the first update for April (with any luck, that should happen within a day or two), a game has popped up on the Leaving Soon list. It’s Quantum Break, released by Microsoft. Remedy Entertainment’s game is not one we would have thought would eventually be removed from the service. However, it is an unusual attempt to mix a traditional video game with a live-action TV show.
It’s not impossible that the Alan Wake story has been repeated. In the past, the Finnish studio bought the IP rights from Microsoft, so the writer went to Remedy in full. Remedy Entertainment then made a deal with Epic Games to make a remaster of the game (so it wasn’t just available on Xbox 360 and PC), paving the way for its sequel. It could be why Quantum Break was removed from the Xbox Game Pass. So it’s fair to ask, when will a multiplatform remaster be announced? (Whether it will be cross-gen is another question…)
When the official announcement of the first Xbox Game Pass update in April 2023 comes, we’ll see if Quantum Break will be among the departing games. If so, Remedy is on to something, and we have no doubt.
