TECH NEWS – The default search engine on Samsung phones has been Google. That could change in the new phones.
Reportedly, Samsung told Google in March that they would switch to a rival, so Microsoft’s Bing would be the new default search engine set up on their future phones. It was not received well by Google, which panicked, as the two companies have been inseparable (the relationship between Samsung and Google has been going on for at least 11-12 years). But what is it that could make Samsung switch to another company soon?
The New York Times has some of Google’s internal communications. Based on that, it says that now the Alphabet-owned company is starting to panic a bit because if Samsung does indeed convert to Microsoft, it could lose a lot of money. The reasoning? There is no artificial intelligence in the search, whereas Bing does. And Apple could do the same, so there could be a double whammy in Google’s backyard.
In response, Google has started to design AI-powered features for its search engine. At Google I/O 2023, the work results could begin to emerge… but with the company’s next big event just over a month away, it’s a question of what they can pull together in that time. And then there’s the project called Magi. Google will try implementing AI in all its services (search, images…). There’s also a new tool, GIFI, which will generate images in Google Image search, Tivoli Tutor (AI to help you learn languages), and a possible new Chrome add-on, Searchalong, where you can ask the chatbot questions while browsing the web.
If Samsung and Apple were to leave Google high and dry, it would not be a chump change: we are talking about $23 billion! However, the company has to realize that manufacturers are starting to implement artificial intelligence in their devices. And compared to ChatGPT, Google Bard is still lagging.
