TECH NEWS – Experts warn that artificial intelligence could harm humans, while Google itself no longer understands what its own AI can do…
Since the public launch of the OpenAI ChatGPT in November, the idea of a shift to an AI-driven workforce has been a growing concern. In an interview on CBS’s “60 Minutes” on Sunday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that the concern we’re seeing in the early stages of AI development is cause for optimism.
“The pace at which we can think and adapt as societal institutions compared to the pace at which the technology is evolving, there seems to be a mismatch,” Pichai said.
A new, evil artificial intelligence bent on destroying humanity may arrive sooner than even the most pessimistic would have expected. James Manyika, Google’s chief technology officer, said on the show that one of their AIs now translates into Bengali, despite not having been taught to do so. All that happened was that they gave it a few instructions in that language, and it did the rest.
Google and Microsoft are in a race to bring artificial intelligence to the masses. Both tech giants – and Amazon AWS – are introducing tools and products such as Google Bard and Microsoft Bing that incorporate ChatGPT into their search engines.
Science fiction authors and Hollywood producers have spent the last hundred years writing grim stories about what happens when AI becomes sentient or brighter than its creators.
“These are deep questions,” Pichai said. “We call this alignment. One way we think about [it is] how do you develop AI systems aligned to human values, including morality?”
According to Pichai, the development of advanced AI should involve not only engineers but also social scientists, ethicists and philosophers.
“I think we have to be very thoughtful,” he said. “And I think these are all things society needs to figure out as we move along. It’s not for a company to decide.”
During the interview, the presenter also asked Pichai if he really thought it was a good idea for Google to let technology out of the bottle that even its own engineers don’t really understand.
Pichai replied that he didn’t think we even understood how the human mind works.
