TECH NEWS – Gamers do not agree with Nintendo’s latest move, which in principle, is aimed at the piracy of the 3DS.
Twelve years after its release, the Nintendo 3DS has received an update. This is a new version that arrived under the radar. The official announcement is terse and not very enlightening: “Further improvements have been made to the overall stability of the system, and other minor modifications have been made to improve the user experience”. Barely a sentence that broke the update stalemate since September 2022. The community discovered the update’s real meaning, generating some anger among players.
Since it seemed odd to see a new update rolled out on a machine that was barely officially supported by Nintendo, gamers set out to find out exactly what had changed.
They discovered that the company’s new update was actually meant to fix vulnerabilities that made the console easier to hack. After the latest update, “all exploits in the Nintendo 3DS hacking guide no longer work,” explained users familiar with the process.
Under normal circumstances, no one would be upset about this change. It goes without saying that companies are perfectly within their rights to fix any security issues that might affect sales of console or machine games. However, some users branded Nintendo’s move as reckless. The recent closure of the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops has severely limited the ability to obtain the games legally. However, this type of technique was one of the easiest alternatives to access previously published titles.
For now, many Nintendo 3DS games can still be purchased in physical stores. However, the supply is increasingly limited and will decrease over the years. After all, we are talking about a console that was released in 2011 and was immediately followed by the release of the Nintendo Switch. In fact, it looks like the glory days of this hybrid machine will soon be a thing of the past. Although it continues to sell at a brisk pace and releases games of the level of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, it is only a matter of time before the successor arrives. In this sense, the shadows towering over the 3DS will be even more noticeable.
