Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Combat System Changes – Could A Long-Awaited Character Return?!

Square Enix has revealed that changes to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s combat system will be made for the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and that is someone fans have been waiting for…

Square Enix has revealed that significant changes have been made to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake combat system for the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Very little has been confirmed about the sequel to FF7 Remake. However, Square Enix made some exciting comments when asked about the Rebirth combat system and if there will be any changes.

With the release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, gamers have realised that Square Enix has taken the game in a very different direction than many had assumed.

No one knows exactly what to expect from FF7 Rebirth. Will it be dramatic changes, and what will those changes involve?

Square Enix took to Twitter to answer some of these questions. In response, they provided developer commentary. One question recently shared asks, “Has the combat system changed from Final Fantasy 7 Remake?”. In response, Square Enix battle director Teruki Endo gives two ambiguous answers. The second is more directly related to the question, answering that players can “work even more closely with other party members than before”. Precisely what this means is unclear, but it certainly has Final Fantasy 7 Remake fans very excited.

Some Final Fantasy fans believe that this means Square Enix will add mechanics where party members will group together to attack. These types of “Double Team” or even “Triple Team” attacks are mechanics found in previous JRPGs. It will be interesting to see how these will fit into the action-oriented combat of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Will the one we won’t name return in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth?

The first part of the answer is even more intriguing, though perhaps less surprising. Endo explains, “In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, new comrades will join you in battle”. In other words, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth players can expect more party days to come. Thanks to the new characters, the combat system in the sequel should feel different, even if no significant changes have been made. Who Square Enix will add to the party in the game is a mystery for now.

The “new companions joining” seems to be the spark that ignited the Vincent Valentine fanbase – a logical association but not a guarantee in itself.

Other interpretations might suggest brand new party members, like Zack Fair. Or returning members who will be “new” to FF7 Rebirth, like Cait Sith or Cid. The game can cut and include these characters at will. As such, this means that Vincent Valentine is an actual possible reference here, but nothing is confirmed.

But this did not stop the enthusiastic fans. While there is some debate in the comments and quote tweets about the SGF’s revelations, the vagueness of previous answers to similar marketing questions and other possible characters, it’s hard to deny the overwhelming wave of Vincent Valentine-comments. It’s clear that, ultimately, many fans are excited to see Vincent Valentine join Cloud in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. But a proper reveal, if confirmed before launch, is likely still to come.
