Doug Cockle, the beloved voice actor behind Geralt of Rivia in CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher trilogy, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Doug Cockle, the beloved voice of Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher games, has announced that he has prostate cancer. A little over a decade before Henry Cavill brought Geralt to life in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of The Witcher, Doug Cockle lent his gritty voice to the mutant swordsman and hired monster hunter in CD Projekt Red’s three main series Witcher video games. As well as Geralt, Cockle has appeared in TV series such as Band of Brothers, was an extra in Captain America: The First Avenger, and voiced characters in games such as Terminator: Resistance and Ghost Recon: Breakpoint.
However, Doug Cockle is best known to gamers for his memorable performance as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher.
His work in all three games was highly acclaimed. He even won a Golden Joystick Award for his performance in 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Of course, many fans hope Cockle will return to the role in the upcoming remake of the first Witcher game. But he admits he doesn’t know much about the project. It’s possible that the game will simply reuse the lines from the 2007 original.
Doug Cockle has alerted fans with the unfortunate news that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The Witcher voice actor revealed that it was discovered during a routine check-up. Treatment is still ongoing. He assured fans that the disease is responding well to treatment. However, he stressed that men over the age of 50 should get themselves tested regularly for prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men, and it is estimated that 1 in 9 men in the United States will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime.
Worse still, there are no symptoms in the early stages of prostate cancer. This makes screening tests such as those recommended by The Witcher’s Doug Cockle even more vital for those at risk. Meanwhile, Cockle has been greeted with support from fans of The Witcher games since his announcement, with many expressing their sympathy and wishing him a speedy recovery.
Geralt of Rivia is one of the most popular video game protagonists in recent times. Part of what makes him so likeable is Doug Cockle’s strong performance. Hopefully, Cockle will be able to make a full recovery from prostate cancer. Perhaps his story will encourage more people to get regular screenings.
