MOVIE NEWS – The second trailer for The Flash movie once again hints at how Barry Allen’s mother, Nora, died in the past. In the DC film, Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) decides to travel back in time to save the life of his mother, Nora Allen (Maribel Verdú), but instead of his noble intention, he brings destruction to his own universe.
With the unexpected return of General Zod (Michael Shannon) and his Kryptonian army, Barry must save the world and repair the disaster he caused. The Flash is a massive multiverse event in the DC movies, with Miller playing two versions of Barry Allen and Michael Keaton’s Batman joining the adventure. The Flash centers on Barry’s determination to save his mother from death in the past. Here’s what the trailers revealed about how Barry lost his mother as a child.
The Flash trailers have yet to clarify exactly how Nora Allen died. The biggest detail is when Barry and her father, Henry Allen (Ron Livingston), find Nora dying in the kitchen of their house, and Henry tells Barry to call 911. While this maintains a sense of mystery about Nora Allen’s death, it is clearly a hugely traumatic event for young Barry.
Director Andy Muschietti talked about how the events of the Flash movie will be “scary”, while the time travel elements in the trailer hint at how wild the story can be. In both trailers, we see young Barry running out of their house as the older, time-travelling himself watches. While this is likely a flashback-like moment where Barry relives that terrible night in his head, it also shows how much emphasis the Flash is putting on Nora Allen’s murder as the event that shattered Barry Allen’s world. However, the Flash movie could also create a new version of this event compared to how it happens in the comics.
Nora Allen was canonically killed by Eobard Thawne aka Reverse-Flash in the comics. In Flashpoint, Barry’s decision to travel back in time and prevent Nora from being killed creates an alternate timeline in which Atlantis and Themyscira are at war, Thomas Wayne has replaced Bruce as Batman, and several other apocalyptic changes occur. Barry’s changes to the time plane make Thawne a nearly invincible Speedster whose knowledge of the Speed Force surpasses Barry’s. Although the Flash movie features enemies such as alternate versions of General Zod and Faora (Antje Traue) and a largely mysterious Dark Flash, there is no indication that Reverse-Flash will be in the film. This strongly suggests that the Flash movie trailers will keep the reveal of Nora’s killer for the movie, while the Flash movie itself may change the circumstances of Nora’s killing somewhat from Flashpoint, and maybe even her killer.
