It seems that legendary game designer Hideo Kojima is looking to expand his creative horizons beyond Earth. He wants to make a game that can be played in space.
After revolutionising game design here on Earth, development genius Hideo Kojima seems to have set his sights on the stars. He recently declared that he wants to design a game that can be played in space. This unexpected yet unsurprising comment from the acclaimed creator of the Metal Gear Solid series will surely blow some gamers’ minds.
Hideo Kojima, who originally entered the games industry as a member of Konami in the late 1980s, hoped to use video games as a springboard to launch his film career.
Although these plans ultimately did not come to fruition, the impact of Kojima’s career as a video game designer, writer and director cannot be overstated. Many fans of the iconic developer were disappointed when it was revealed last month that Kojima would not be involved in the development of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. This will be the upcoming remake of his smash hit Metal Gear Solid 3.
Hideo Kojima revealed at an appearance with The Game Awards founder Geoff Keighley that he would like to travel to space. Also, to design a game intended to be played in a zero-gravity environment. The comments, initially reported by PCGamesN, were made during a Q&A after a screening of the new documentary Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds. The latter explores the life and work of the legendary creator. When asked what he wanted to achieve in his lifetime, Kojima enthusiastically replied, “I want to go to outer space”.
While it is sometimes hard to tell when the iconic game developer is joking, Kojima sounded like he was serious about the idea. Expanding on his answer, Kojima noted that he wants to make a game “that you can play in space”. Because current games probably can’t be played in space. He then jokingly pleaded with the audience that someone “please send me up to space”.
A game developed in and for a zero-gravity environment would not be entirely surprising from a developer known for embracing new technologies.
Some gamers have even speculated that the game master might be working on a game for the Vision Pro headset. Especially after Kojima appeared at Apple’s WWDC event earlier this month. He may have been joking with that statement. But nothing can be ruled out when you’re talking about one of the most creative minds in gaming.
