TECH NEWS – It’s inevitable that Mark Zuckerberg’s CPU and GPU boost was for Apple Vision Pro, and now we have a comparison video to show the impact of the firmware update.
The M2 and R1 chips in Apple’s AR headsets are currently unrivaled, and their pricing reflects that, too. In contrast, Meta offers cheaper products (and the soon-to-be-released Meta Quest 3 won’t be that expensive either), and the company has shown how the v55 software has made the two headsets much more powerful. One could scoff at this and ask if Meta then deliberately degraded their devices’ performance to push sales of later models, but we’d rather believe that they found a way to improve performance along the way…
“We promised you a performance upgrade, and now we’re delivering. With v55, we’re updating the Quest 2 and Pro GPU and CPU. Both headsets should see an up to 26% CPU performance increase, while you can expect an up to 19% GPU speed increase for Quest 2 and an 11% GPU speed increase for Quest Pro. As developers take advantage of these changes, look for smoother gameplay, a more responsive UI, and richer content on both headsets. And we’re enabling Dynamic Resolution Scaling for Quest 2 and Pro, so games and apps can take advantage of increased pixel density without dropping frames,” Meta wrote in the post.
The update is supposed to be available for both headsets now, and in the video below, The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners is shown running at a higher resolution and more stable with the new firmware. We suspect that after the launch of the Apple Vision Pro, Meta cowered in fear, and that’s why they were quick to come up with the new system software (as well as the price cut on Meta Quest 2).
Better performance and a lower price can never be cited as a negative (the latter only if it would generate an unstoppable loss for the company, but no one is stupid enough to launch something like that).
