The French publisher should make a more straightforward, focused game for the next installments in both franchises.
For Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, Ubisoft has said it intends to go back to basics with this game (Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown follows a similar path, roo). Why not do the same with Far Cry 7, especially after making the series somewhat divisive with the last episodes (especially the 5, New Dawn, 6 trio)? Far Cry began in 2004 with a different style and only later started to offer players a larger sandbox area. However, as the world and the insanity of the game’s varying baddies grew, the ratings began to go down.
With Far Cry 7, Ubisoft could do with cutting corners on what seems unnecessary. It should have a more detailed, smaller world so that many interesting things could be hidden from the players and a more linear style of play, which might bring new life into the almost 20-year-old franchise. It would allow new game mechanics to come in instead of working on the world, as shorter game time would allow for a more concentrated but not exhausting experience to be presented to the audience. It would also give more focus to the main villain, and perhaps players who have stopped following the last few episodes might return.
Ubisoft hasn’t announced a new Far Cry for 2023; maybe something is planned for next year (but by then, we should forget about PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, although both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X have been priced up…). The twentieth anniversary could be an excellent opportunity to move away from the overly prolific open world, which can be seen as tiresome in the short term. Yves Guillemot and his team could get closer to what the players want.
It’s no use having a big world in a game if it’s boring or if there’s no motivation to have fun in it or do anything besides missions…
