MOVIE NEWS – Netflix has been given the cold shoulder after news of the Titanic tragedy amidst news that the 1997 Titanic will be available in their library.
Netflix found itself in big trouble after it was revealed that Titanic is one of the titles that will be added to the streaming platform on July 1 in the wake of news of the Titan submarine tragedy. The film, directed by deep-sea diving veteran James Cameron, is set during the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Since its premiere in 1997, the wreck’s fame has led to several tours of the remains, one of which led to the recent tragedy of the submarine Titan.
According to Variety, Netflix has set July 1 as the date for Titanic’s arrival on its streaming platform, less than two weeks after the OceanGate Titan incident first went public on June 18.
The mini-submarine explosion that resulted in the tragic deaths of all five passengers was confirmed less than four days later. Because of this, many observers claimed that Netflix was trying to exploit the tragedy. According to them, it can’t be a coincidence that Titanic is being added to its library just days after the disaster.
Although the timing of the addition of Titanic to Netflix could not have come at a worse time, it seems unlikely that it was done deliberately or for profit. Netflix signs licensing agreements such as the one that brought Titanic to its platform months in advance. This means that the film’s arrival was timed to coincide with US Independence Day. So long before news of the OceanGate submarine hit the news feed.
Despite the terrible timing, the tragedy remains fresh in the media. Investigators are trying to find out what led to the incident. OceanGate’s Titan submarine was a vehicle designed to take tourists paying a ticket price of $250,000 on a 10-hour trip thousands of feet below the surface to get a better look at the Titanic’s famous wreckage.
OceanGate had been taking customers down to the wreck since 2021, but much of the deep-sea diving community considered their vehicle too experimental.
The company’s abandoning traditional surveys and investigations have also been heavily criticised. The warnings OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush ignored reminded Cameron of the actual Titanic. It was similarly captained by a captain who also ignored warning signs of impending disaster. Moreover, the incident surrounding the Titan led to the Oscar-winning film gaining ground. Indeed, even before the devastating disaster, memes and references were being made. With Netflix adding Titanic to its streaming library relatively quickly, the film will likely receive a lot of attention. The historical tragedy is now anchored by another ocean disaster.

Netflix is overstepping the boundaries of decency on this timing. People died in a tragic accident a6 the Titanic site and now to capitalize on the moment to garner viewers is beyond distasteful. https://t.co/tBL9NDLxLv
