Quantic Dream, now part of Chinese tech giant NetEase, doesn’t look so rosy for Disney’s IP.
The French studio is known for David Cage and his games Fahrenheit, Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, and Detroit: Become Human. Now, however, they’re working on Star Wars: Eclipse using another company’s IP, which we’ve written about in the past, and Quantic Dream is taking its time to switch its current style to an adventure game genre project. Of course, it will require more people and knowledge, but what Tom Henderson wrote about on Insider Gaming hits us more like a brick.
With Star Wars: Eclipse, they’re aiming for a 2026 release, but the game could be delayed for several reasons, including difficulty finding the human resources to make the game. This situation has arisen because of problems in the workplace (sexual harassment, crunch, and toxic work culture). In addition, the size of the game concept means that we are at least three years away from the game’s release, and if it were to launch in 2027, they might begin developing for the new-generation hardware by then, which could push the release further.
Not much is known about the game. It’s going to be an action-adventure genre game (something new for Quantic Dream), and last year, studio founder Cage added that it will be the French team’s most ambitious game yet, and not just a repainted Detroit: Become Human, although that game will have some kind of influence on Star Wars: Eclipse. It’s certainly better not to expect gameplay for another year or year and a half, based on all we heard.
After this article was published, WCCFTech was contacted by Quantic Dream. The French company clarified that the game is still in development, but they have no problems with staffing, as they have 50% more people working after adding to their Paris and Montréal studios. The Paris Court of Appeal has swept away the harassment against the studio, and the studio will continue to strive for a respectful and supportive working environment. (It’s funny how they linked a blog post from last year.)
Their position does not sound good.
