Bungie: Despite Winning In Court, The Developers Are Still Being Harassed

Despite the $500,000 verdict, Bungie employees are still being harassed for working there, and the studio has said that its community team won’t be much more active anytime soon because of it.

Recently, Bungie won $500,000 in court from a Destiny 2 player in damages for repeatedly threatening and making racist remarks to a community manager. Kathryn Tewson, who worked on the case, said the verdict opened a path for parties with resources to identify stochastic terrorists who could be held accountable in court. But despite it, Bungie has written on the Destiny subreddit that developers (and some community managers among them) continue to face harassment simply because of their workplace…

This statement was a response to a request that the social media account of the Destiny 2 team, which was set up in January, should be used more often to avoid using the personal accounts of community managers, and thus not have to tag more people. “I’m not saying you should expose your employees to people who might harm them. As someone who has been threatened (and almost attacked) at the workplace, I completely understand where you are coming from. That said, it would be beneficial for everyone if you used the account more than you currently do, whether it’s a response to specific feedback tweets/posts now and then or a response that explains why certain things are unfeasible (so you can receive less feedback that you can’t do anything with) or whatever… I just think it’d be better for everyone,” wrote the original “claimant”, Cruggles 30.

The response came from Bungie: “Unfortunately, devs who aren’t even CMs are still being harassed just because they work at Bungie, so using the CM account on Reddit will put a bigger target on all of the CM’s backs. I completely understand the want to go back to how we used to respond all the time here, but that time has passed. Until everyone can feel safe again, I wouldn’t expect to see many responses from us here for the foreseeable future.”

According to Bungie, there is a better chance of getting a response on their forum, but GamesRadar pointed out that there was a comment that has since been deleted on Reddit that said that harassment is a part of life and that it is strange that they base their PR strategy on 0.1% of actions. In response, the studio said that they don’t accept harassment as part of their lives, that this attitude is unhealthy, and that they don’t put their lives at risk for a game, let alone Reddit. It’s hard to argue with that…
