Sony has started sending out email invites for the next significant system software beta for PlayStation 5 in several countries.
The PlayStation Blog has the announcement of the new firmware, which is expected to be available to everyone later this year. More features are coming to make it easier to use. It will be possible to use a second controller as an assistant (Settings > Accessibility > Controllers > Use Second Controller for Assistance, and then turn on Use Assist Controller). You can also turn on haptic feedback when navigating the console menus.
If you have a Dolby Atmos-compatible sound system, the console will also support it with the new firmware for better immersion (Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Audio Format (Priority)). The party interface has also been updated, and you can invite someone to a closed party without being automatically added to the party. Players can send open and closed invites to parties instead of a single user. If someone shares their gameplay (Share Screen), a small window will also show a “preview” before joining the team. Under the Friends tab, it’s easy to see who you can participate with an icon (Options button, Join Game, or Join from profile card). In the game hub, you can see how many tournaments you’ve entered, your best ranking, and when the next one is coming up. You can see the complete list by tapping on the tile. You can also respond to messages with emojis.
You can also search for your games in our games library (why wasn’t it included before?); Game Help cards have been improved to help you with your games (you can see currently available, previously available, coming soon, and completed tasks next to the half-finished activities; details are shown to the right of the selected card), and Sony has added tips (Settings > Guide & Tips, Health & Safety, and Other Information > Guide and Tips). You can turn the PlayStation 5’s beep off when you switch it on/off or put it to sleep (Settings > System > Beep Sound > Volume/Mute Beep Sound).
Finally, you can add up to an 8TB M.2 SSD to the console (the limit used to be 4TB), but the SSD must meet the requirements.
