Microsoft Holds Back Multiplatform Games!

Several developers have been complaining about the Xbox Series S. Microsoft has admitted that it sees this console as the base model for the current generation of consoles, so the situation is not simple.

Microsoft sees the Xbox Series X as the ‘half-generation’ upgrade, while developers mainly look for parity between the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. However, the Redmond company expects that there should be no difference in features between the two Xbox Series models, and it is starting to cause more and more problems for developers. Among them is Finland’s Remedy Entertainment, whose studio communications director Thomas Puha sympathizes with Larian Studios.

Not coincidentally, the Belgian team hasn’t announced when the Xbox Series version of Baldur’s Gate III will be released, as the split-screen co-op gameplay on Xbox Series S is not running stable (the team promises updates about it later this year). Here’s Puha’s reflection on Twitter (no, not X): “I feel Larian’s pain on [the Xbox] Series S. It’s not about “just optimize at the end” – Oh, nah. You have to consider the technical limitations from the beginning of development. Nobody wants to think of that when you start making your game when everything is possible.”

You could mention that it’s the same situation as with the PC, with a million configurations. He also reflected on it: although he admitted to oversimplifying things, you have to believe him that the scalability of the PC version is different, and for several reasons, it’s not as easy to do the same on the two Xbox Series consoles. So the situation is a bit complicated, and because of that, there’s a chance that some developers might skip Microsoft’s console pair because of the restrictions they’ve put in place.

The easiest solution would be for Microsoft to drop the mandatory feature parity between the two Xbox Series. Still, the Redmond company is too proud of itself, so that it will be a last resort for them…
