Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, also discussed why there is no PC version of Red Dead Redemption’s neutered (multiplayer-free…) port.
Last year, analysts suggested that Grand Theft Auto VI would be released in Take-Two’s 2024 fiscal year between April 2023 and March 2024. Still, this year, the publisher provided insight into its forecast for its next fiscal year, indicating net bookings for the current period would be lower, but that’s no longer the case for the fiscal year 2025, which would see a new episode of Grand Theft Auto released by the end of March 2025 at the latest.
Lainie Goldstein, Take-Two’s chief financial officer, spoke cryptically about Grand Theft Auto VI during the company’s quarterly financial report: “In closing, we are confident that the actions our teams are taking this year are preparing us for a strong trajectory of growth. Through our collective efforts, we continue to believe that we are positioning our business for a significant inflection point in fiscal 2025 that will culminate in us delivering new record levels of operating performance next year and beyond. We thank our stakeholders for their continued support and look forward to delivering on this exciting next chapter.” Records? Only GTA VI can do that.
And what about the new version of Red Dead Redemption? On the one hand, it’s not being developed by Rockstar Games, which doesn’t bode well (the last outsourced development, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, was lousy!), and on the other hand, it’s been stripped of its multiplayer element. It won’t be released for Xbox Series because of backward compatibility and will be released for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. Zelnick told IGN that it’s up to the developers to make the announcements, so he essentially blamed Double Eleven, meaning it’s up to them to make the PC port…
Still, we would expect a bolder attitude from Take Two. The overpriced, watered-down remake of Red Dead Redemption is out on August 17 for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
