TECH NEWS – The “greens” are reportedly planning to replace desktop cards with more laptop graphics chips…
A Chinese website has started a rumor that Nvidia is going to change the ratios in GPU production a bit, as manufacturers of laptops designed for gaming have made a greater demand for the company’s “mobile” (i.e., portable) graphics chips. The desktop card market is okay and robust. Still, there is no talk of increasing production, so Ada Lovelace GPUs will migrate to laptops, primarily affecting GeForce RTX 4060 and RTX 4070 chips.
The laptop RTX 4070 uses the same chip as the desktop 4060 Ti, and the RTX 4060 is identical across the two platforms. If what the site says is true, then the stock of mid-range video cards could drop towards the end of the year, and if we’re being cynical, it is Nvidia’s way of keeping current prices down because the RTX 40 series, while primarily good (the RTX 4060 is more like a 50, though…), it is still expensive. And sellers have tried to spur demand with promotions, but this is not going to be an easy situation, and with the thinned supply, the company can maintain pricing…
We’ve heard that there wasn’t as much interest after the release of the RTX 4070 and that Nvidia has cut back production somewhat, but we overlooked that. We might not move stock either because the source was talking about China. However, AMD may still have a say in pricing, as they plan to release their new cards in September. The RX 7600 has underpriced the RTX 4060, and the RX 7800 may do the same with the RTX 4070, so compared to Nvidia’s $600 card, we can have it for $550, with perhaps slightly better performance.
Let’s hope there won’t be another video card shortage like in 2021. Except that we have to ask Nvidia: why is the low-end GT 710 and GT 1030 pair still in production?!
