Samsung’s AR Headset: Nowhere Near To The Apple Vision Pro!

TECH NEWS – Not only does the anonymous prototype look weak, but its hardware can’t match the performance of the Apple Vision Pro…

A Chinese website, VR陀螺 (no way to translate the term into English), reported on the Korean tech giant’s device, which we got the feeling that Samsung has somewhat underestimated the realization of such hardware, as it is neither aesthetically nor performance-wise on par with Apple’s Vision Pro. The leak was posted by Brad Lynch on Twitter, and he included a picture of the as-yet-unnamed device.

Let’s start with the look: the Samsung AR headset isn’t stylish. Even if we’re talking about a prototype, Apple’s mixed reality (MR) product looks more appealing. But if that were all that was wrong with Samsung’s machine, it wouldn’t be such a problem, but we have to be dubious about the innards, too. While the Apple Vision Pro is built on an M2 and R2 chip, Samsung’s prototype uses an Exynos 2200 (with AMD’s RDNA 2). For context: we’re seeing this in Samsung Galaxy S22 phones (so not even the latest S23).

The Exynos 2200 was notorious for not being power efficient (it was a battery hog, so to speak), and even its performance was not outstanding. Samsung’s product has microLED panels, you can plug the battery in the back (no cable tethered to it), and you can use the headset without controllers, which the South Korean company probably postponed immediately after the Apple Vision Pro announcement because the two devices are not on the same level, even though Samsung had four tracking cameras, two RGB cameras and a depth sensor for complete color transfer…

Consequently, the AR headset will be released later (because the current prototype simply wouldn’t be up to scratch). Still, until then, Samsung could use better hardware and improve its design. Still, the company doesn’t make chips, so it would either have to rely on Exynos or order something from Qualcomm… unless Samsung invents something revolutionary, which is unlikely.
