That’s Why Filming Strays was Completely Surreal

CINEMA NEWS – They swear terribly, they have an opinion about the strange world, and they want bloody revenge. This is a short synopsis of The Dogs Outcast, in which four of them go on a strange campaign. The comedy is highly age-restricted, because dogs speak their hearts out.

The filmmakers paid close attention to ensuring that the protagonists were all typical animal-human characters, so there is a charming border terrier, a great Dane in all respects, and a good-humored Australian shepherd. and a smart boston terrier. The dogs in the American version are voiced by such excellent comedians as Will Ferrell, Jamie Foxx, Isla Fisher and Randall Park. Of course, the “post-dubbing” did not take place on set, but in the studio, which is exactly why the making of the film was surreal, according to the creators – the four-legged actors didn’t even move.

“We didn’t have to improvise, try things out in advance, but we usually asked the trainers to take the dogs from here to there, from there to here, and then look at the camera – producer Chris Miller told Entainment To Weekly. “All this took place in deathly silence, there was no noise like on a traditional shoot.”

However, there were challenges. In the case of an age-restricted dog movie, it is a basic requirement that the four-legged heroes, like all ordinary people in real life, constantly break things. For this, the trainers created a command word that can be interpreted as “hági-hági”, and the furry stars surprisingly quickly felt in their element.

There is also a human character in Strays, namely the main villain, on whom the dogs want to take terrible revenge. The villain who treats dogs cruelly is played by comedian Will Forte in the film, who also did not have an easy job. “He had to play a character so depraved that the viewer can’t wait for him to receive his deserved punishment,” Miller explained to the magazine. “But it couldn’t be so repulsive that it lost its fun altogether.” Will solved this perfectly: his main villain is loathsome, but maybe not a little.”
