The $50 PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions of Red Dead Redemption have been released, but more could have been achieved.
Released in 2010, Red Dead Redemption has been re-released (we won’t call it a port or remaster, it’s just not either of those) on Sony’s 2013 console and the big N’s hybrid platform. Neither of these are particularly modern devices, and essentially Rockstar’s game was given some visual and gameplay tweaks by Double Eleven Studios (so it wasn’t even Rockstar themselves who worked on it!) and then released on PS4 and Switch. ElAnalistaDeBits has made a comparison video of the two new game versions, and the PlayStation 3 version is also featured as a comparison.
Red Dead Redemption runs at 30 FPS at 1080p resolution when docked on Nintendo’s hardware, but when switching to portable mode, the resolution drops to 720p, and the frame rate still doesn’t go above 30 frames per second. PlayStation 4 is no better off, with the Western adventure running at 1080p at 30 FPS. On the PlayStation 3, the resolution was 640p, so both consoles beat the original in this respect.
PlayStation 4 has better anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering compared to Nintendo Switch. AMD FSR 2 is also supported on PS4, giving you better image quality without compromising performance. There’s not much difference between the two new editions, except that the game looks nicer on PlayStation 4, but the Nintendo Switch shows promising results. It’s something to keep an eye out for if you’re playing Red Dead Redemption on the go, which was rumored to have been remastered, but was canceled after the quality of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition was poor.
Instead, we got an overpriced re-release, and while the Xbox Series can replicate the Xbox 360 original relatively nicely, the PlayStation 5 is left floundering. Thanks for the greed (and the lack of 60 FPS), Take-Two… At least there will be a retail release for the re-release. Look for it in the stores for both PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch from October 13.
