It’s an idiotic cliché that size isn’t always everything, but in Ubisoft’s open-world games, the area you can explore is sometimes exaggerated…
Most of the French publisher’s games in the last few years have been open-world. It only makes sense if it’s worth looking around. Otherwise, it’s left untouched because it’s empty, there’s no reward for exploring, and it takes its toll on the game’s performance. Ubisoft may have sensed that the audience is getting a little tired of it, so the next part of Assassin’s Creed, which is openly described as more minor, is also noticeable in the size of the world map.
On Twitter, Access The Animus has posted a map of Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, which will be bundled with copies released at launch or if ordered from Amazon. According to the map, Baghdad/Madīnat as-Salām, the districts of Abbasiyah, Harbiyah, and Karkh, as well as Dur-Kurigalzu, Al-Anbar, Jariariyah, and Alamut, will make their way to Ubisoft’s game. So it will be worth venturing beyond the city walls, but let’s not get carried away.
In the developer video embedded below, Ubisoft Bordeaux and Montréal talk about their work and research to make the city authentic as if we are in the ninth century. However, not much from that era has survived. There is also talk of the three different districts of the city (Haribiyah, Abassiyah, Karkh), and in general, the player is left with the feeling that less is more this time. If something is always happening around you, you don’t need to create two or three times more areas, and so you can have a more compact experience, albeit with limitations, because this game is also cross-gen.
The release of Assassin’s Creed: Mirage has been brought forward, as it will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 5. In addition to Denuvo, the PC port will feature VMProtect DRM to ensure that Ubisoft’s upcoming autumn release won’t run properly on older machines.
