More details of the GTA VI leak have emerged as Rockstar hacker has been found responsible in court.
The teenage hacker responsible for the leak of GTA VI has been found accountable in court after new information about the hacking came to light. In September 2022, fans of the series finally got a glimpse of the long-awaited game after 90 developer videos were released showing the open-world title in action.
The leak confirmed that the series will return to Vice City and will feature a female protagonist, including details that were previously dismissed as mere speculation.
According to the new reports, a British court has found that 18-year-old Arion Kurtaj helped carry out the hacking as a member of the Lapsus$ hacking group. In court, the jury heard new information about the hacking. We also heard about some new twists in the execution of the hacking.
According to the BBC, Kurtaj and a 17-year-old (who cannot be named) started hacking together after meeting in 2021. They were arrested a year later after the Lapsus$ attack on Nvidia. They threatened to release more data unless they paid a ransom.
Kurtaj was eventually doxxed by rival hackers and placed in a Travelodge by police over security concerns. Meanwhile, he was formally released on bail. While in the Travelodge, Kurtaj was able to attack several companies, including Revolut, Uber and Rockstar Games.
The court heard that Kurtaj had posted a message on Rockstar Slack in which he wrote: “I am not an employee of Rockstar, I am an attacker” and warned that he had downloaded GTA VI data.
“If Rockstar does not contact me on Telegram within 24 hours, I will start releasing the source code,” he warned.
After that, 90 clips of GTA VI development footage were leaked on GTAForums, but it didn’t take long before the hacker was caught in the act. Officers found an Amazon Firestick, keyboard, mouse and smartphone at the Travelodge. These gave him access to the internet and allowed him to break the conditions of his release.
Both teenagers will be sentenced at a later date. In the meantime, Kurtaj will remain in pre-trial detention. Rockstar says the “unfortunate” hacking will not affect the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, but the game has not been officially announced for now.
