MOVIE NEWS – Director Zack Snyder has revealed that he’d love to make his own video game movie, but the original creator of the game in question has one important condition.

Director Zack Snyder has revealed that he’s interested in making a Gears of War movie, but the original creator has one condition. The Gears of War video game franchise, which began with the original game in 2006, is based on the best-selling books, and plans for a live-action adaptation of the game began back in 2007 when New Line Cinema first purchased the film rights. After passing through several hands, Netflix was the latest to set its sights on making the games into a movie, announcing earlier this year that Dune screenwriter Jon Spaihts would pen the script.

In a recent interview with IGN, Snyder revealed a potential interest in directing a Gears of War or Halo movie, although the latter has already been adapted into a Paramount+ TV series. Upon hearing the news, the creator of the original Gears of War game, Cliff Bleszinski, took to Twitter to express his approval, but only on the condition that the main character, Marcus, be played by Dave Bautista.

Luckily, it won’t take much to convince Bautista to take on the role, as he’s already expressed interest in directing the movie. You can check out Synder’s original commentary below:

Well, there’s a lot. I mean, we’ve talked about a lot… You know, Gears always came up, sort of, in our circles. So I was a fan of the game, if I remember correctly. I’ve always been interested in the Halo franchise… Of course they did, but I always thought it would be incredible.

Based on recent statements, it seems like it’s only a matter of time before Netflix puts Snyder in charge of the Gears of War project. Having previously signed an exclusive first-look deal with the streaming giant, the Rebel Moon director has been quite effusive in his praise of his relationship with Netflix, which he says gives him a great deal of creative freedom as a filmmaker.

With Netflix having already released Snyder’s two-part Star Wars-inspired Rebel Moon, as well as inviting him back for a sequel to the upcoming Army of the Dead franchise, the streaming service clearly has a lot of confidence in his abilities. And since Snyder already has a good working relationship with Bautista, it would be a natural choice to cast the former WWE and Guardians of the Galaxy star as the potential lead.

However, if Netflix does end up putting Snyder in charge of Gears of War, it could have some implications for the planned Army of the Dead sequel, Planet of the Dead. Back in 2021, Snyder revealed that this project would be his next priority after Rebel Moon, but Netflix may be more interested in putting Gears of War at the top of his to-do list. Either way, with a director and potential lead actor already signed up to work on the movie, it seems like Netflix will have a much easier time getting the project off the ground than other studios’ previous attempts.
