The Polish studio has also confirmed that a second expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 will not be made.
CD Projekt (CDP) has announced its financial results for the first half of 2023. From this document, we learned that The Witcher Project’s “New Saga,” codenamed Polaris, is currently the company’s most important new project. At the end of July, nearly two hundred and sixty people worked on this game, making it the largest after the team behind Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.
Night City’s expansion won’t be the largest in the following fiscal report. CEO Adam Kicinski says most people working on the expansion will be transferred to The Witcher team during September. However, despite the renewed interest in Cyberpunk 2077, the Poles are not going to change their plans and are sticking to their statement that Phantom Liberty will be the only expansion for the game!
VGC transcripted what Kicinski said: “The decision has been made. As we have announced long ago, we won’t make a second or third expansion. This is the only expansion of the game, and it has nothing to do with the numbers and how satisfied or not we are with sales or anything of the kind. It’s a technological decision, to be honest. This is the last time we’re working on the Red Engine for the time being, at least, and in the foreseeable future, we are working on the Unreal Engine from Epic. This was one of the key reasons why we decided this was the only one.”
However, Cyberpunk 2077 will have a SEQUEL, codenamed Project Orion. Don’t expect it any time soon, as it is still in the planning phase, i.e., there aren’t many developers behind the project, as you can see in the workforce distribution diagram below. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC on September 26, as it’s no longer being made for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, so it’s time to switch generations.
