There’s still a week to go to renew your PlayStation Plus subscription at the old price, and it’s worth it because the price increase is significant in percentage terms.
Yesterday, when PlayStation Plus Essential’s September trio of games was announced, Sony confirmed at the end of its post that it was increasing the price of its twelve-month subscription across all three tiers of PlayStation Plus, including Extra and Premium. As important news affects all subscribers, all the details are worth reviewing and communicating.
At US prices, PlayStation Plus Essential was $60 for 12 months. Extra was $100, and Premium was $120 for a year. The new pricing for new subscribers brings the annual fee to 80 for Essential, 135 for Extra, and 160 for Premium. So 33%, 35%, 33% is the rate of price increase. For Europe, we also go through the pricing. €60 for PlayStation Plus Essential, 100 for Extra, and 120 for Premium. With the new pricing, PS Plus Essential’s annual price becomes €72 (+20%), PS Plus Extra increases to €126 (+26%), and PS Plus Premium is increasing to €152 (+26.6%). So these aren’t your ordinary percentage hikes unless you live in Hungary, as there, due to the incompetent, money-hungry state party, food inflation has been significantly higher throughout 2022 and 2023.
Those with an existing 12-month subscription can renew at the old price until November 6 if their current subscription expires by then, but from September 6, switching to the lower tier will also be subject to the new fees. Also, seeing how the Xbox Game Pass, the main competitor to PlayStation Plus, increased prices in July, it was a matter of time before Sony decided to follow Microsoft’s suit. So… will Sony stop publishing PlayStation Plus subscriber figures altogether?
