According to Remedy Entertainment, the game has a lot of lore tied to the Finnish studio.
Alan Wake 2 has long been known to have two main characters, as FBI agent Saga Anderson joins Alan Wake. It’s no wonder that many feared that the writer of the game’s name might be overshadowed in his game, but Remedy creative director Sam Lake has calmed the fears in a new interview. Remedy’s aim was not to divert attention from Alan or the franchise’s history but to create a Remedy universe of sorts so that the Finnish studio’s new game could tie in with the original Alan Wake and Control. Still, because of the information overload, the Saga section has been tuned to have less lore and insanity segments, benefiting new players.
“While [Alan Wake 2] is a sequel to Alan Wake, it’s also a Remedy Connected Universe experience. So, it’s connected not only to Alan Wake but also to Control. With all of this in the background, it must be very easily approachable for new players who have never played any Remedy games. The game begins with FBI agents coming to this small-town setting in Washington State to investigate a string of ritualistic killings — a serial killer, essentially. This is familiar to everybody, and it felt like a perfect starting point to get the new players and our fans into this experience. That being said, the fans of our previous games are important to us, and we want to keep telling stories from the rich foundation the Remedy Connected Universe provides. So… we get everybody in, and the story is self-contained enough that everybody can be excited about and understand it. For the returning fans, there is a ton of lore, a ton of exploration, a ton of threads that have started in Alan Wake and Control that we’ll pick up and take further,” Lake said.
Alan Wake 2 was inspired by Stephen King and David Lynch, among others. The Saga sections have also been influenced by serial killer and folk-horror works (The Silence of the Lambs, Hereditary, Midsommar, The Witch…). Se7en, Taxi Driver, and Inception inspired Alan’s portions. Watch the video below for 11 minutes of gameplay from Saga Anderson’s portion, courtesy of IGN.
Alan Wake 2 will be released on October 27 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC (Epic Games Store).
