It’s not enough that GSC Game World is heavily involved in the war Russia has been waging against Ukraine since February last year; there are also complications within the studio!
A Czech publication, Vortex, reported that on Thursday, September 7, a fire broke out at GSC Game World’s Prague office. The Ukrainian team moved their headquarters here because of the situation in Ukraine. The studio has confirmed that no one was injured in the incident but that one of the three floors used by the developers has been severely damaged and will require complete restoration (worth roughly $66,000). GSC Game World uses two other floors, but there was no damage there. The floor affected by the fire may have had the company’s backup servers. A spokesperson for the studio confirmed the fire, and they are investigating.
A GSC Game World developer also reported the fire on the official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Discord: “It is true. Fortunately, none of the employees or office staff were injured in the accident. A fire broke out in our office in Prague on Thursday. Even though the fire was successfully put out, one of the office floors now requires a full restoration. Further details of the accident are still being investigated. We express our deepest appreciation for your questions and the words of support we have been receiving. No anomaly, not even a “Burner,” will make us stop pursuing our final goal. We’ve dealt with worse than that before. This is fine.”
He is not wrong because GSC Game World’s studio used to be in the Ukrainian capital, and the war brought them further west to the Czech capital. However, it is not yet clear if there will be further delays for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 due to the fire. The studio has already been through several hacking attacks and leaks (most likely carried out by Russians…), so “it’s been worse” is not fiction.
According to the Gamescom press release, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will not be released in 2023 but will launch in the first quarter of 2024 on Xbox Series and PC and will also be available on Xbox Game Pass.
