Microsoft has released a surprise update to its Xbox Game Pass subscription service, adding one of the best games of 2020.

Without any prior announcement, Microsoft has updated its Xbox Game Pass offering with Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition, one of the best-reviewed video games of 2020! It’s sporadic that Microsoft adds a surprise new game to its Game Pass offering. However, it has happened a few times in the past.

Most recently, it happened at the end of August when Microsoft added Call of the Wild: The Angler to Xbox Game Pass unannounced.

Now Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition is available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers on PC, Xbox consoles and the cloud. For the uninitiated, Spiritfarer is a critically acclaimed indie game. In it, players must guide spirits to the afterlife. Known for its passionate narrative, atmospheric atmosphere, cooperative support and immersive control mechanics, Spiritfarer is one of the highest-rated games of 2020. So it’s a fantastic addition to the Game Pass offering for those who haven’t played it yet.

Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition includes the base game plus three significant content updates. These arrived for the beloved indie game after its release. This gives Spiritfarer fans who were playing the game at launch but missed the updates the chance to revisit the game and interact with new ghosts and other new content. So, the surprise addition to Game Pass will be exciting for newcomers and longtime fans alike.

This happens not to be the first time Spiritfarer has been added to Xbox Game Pass. Spiritfarer was a Day 1 Game Pass game back in 2020. It will remain available on the subscription service until August 2022.

Spiritfarer’s reappearance on Game Pass means that the popular indie has only been away for about a year, but it’s unclear exactly how long it will remain available this time around.

Those interested should definitely play Spiritfarer now that it’s back on Xbox Game Pass. Spiritfarer fans should know that Thunder Lotus Games’ next title, the 33-player co-op game 33 Immortals, is also coming to Game Pass. The game will be released as the first daily game on the service sometime in 2024.
