Mortal Kombat 1: How Kenshi’s Tower Ending Could Signal the Arrival of Sonya Blade and Kano

MK1’s tower endings provide satisfying epilogues for all characters, and Kenshi’s could herald the arrival of two fan-favorite fighters.

The Mortal Kombat 1 campaign will see many familiar faces in very different circumstances than fans are used to. Scorpion and Sub-Zero are brothers, Raiden is a simple farmer, and Johnny Cage is a struggling actor nearing the end of his career. By the end of the campaign, many of these iconic fighters will have fought pivotal battles that recall canonized stories from the past, but it’s still clear that their futures are uncertain. If players want to know what to expect from Mortal Kombat 1’s roster, they need only complete the game’s towers and watch each character’s endgame.

MK1’s tower endings are hugely important to a potential sequel, as each one serves as an epilogue for each fighter. While many of them can have a significant impact on NetherRealm’s future storytelling, a tower ending can also set the stage for potential DLC fighters. This would be the ending of Kenshi Takahashi, who suffers a great loss but also gains great power in MK1. In a move that ties into previous MK mythology, Kenshi’s tower endgame could signal the addition of fan favorites Sonya Blade and Kano as DLC fighters in a future Kombat pack.

Explanation of Kenshi’s Tower endgame

The endgame of Kenshi’s MK1 Tower begins with the blind swordsman working toward the goal he set for himself at the beginning of the campaign: to restore the honor of his family’s name. In his fight against the Yakuza, Kenshi finds an ally that should be familiar to many MK fans. Jackson Briggs, commonly known as Jax, joins Kenshi to fight the gang together. Jax only works with Kenshi for a short time, but that all changes when Shang Tsung tries to steal Kenshi’s sword in front of Jax. It is at this point that Jax first encounters a world outside of the Earth Empire, and this motivates him to create a government agency to deal with this discovery.

After Kenshi tells Jax all about Outworld, which Briggs thought was made up for Johnny Cage movies, he convinces the FBI to create the Outworld Investigative Agency. He offers Kenshi a job at the OIA, which Kenshi accepts, explaining the importance of living a life of integrity. This new agency is reminiscent of the Special Forces, which have featured prominently in previous MK games as a group tasked with dealing with threats from other worlds. With the introduction of this agency, Sonya Blade and Kano have the best chance of being included as future DLC in MK1.

How Sonya Blade and Kano may appear in MK1

Mortal Kombat 1 already has its first Kombat Pack, but there could be a possibility of a second Kombat Pack for Sonya Blade and Kano. Now that the OIA has been created, Sonya could be introduced as a new member of the agency, working closely with Jax and Kenshi. Kano can return to his usual role as leader of the Black Dragon, causing trouble for the OIA as they investigate disturbances in Outworld. If MK1 doesn’t include story DLC with Sonya and Kano, they may not get a big reveal, but as iconic MK fighters, they probably won’t need one.

Mortal Kombat 1 will feature Sonya Blade and Kano as cameo fighters, but there is a precedent for cameos being moved to in-game fighters. It’s hard to say how many Kombat Packs MK1 will get, let alone who will be in them, but many longtime fans would probably be happy to see Sonya and Kano get in on the action. The endgame of Kenshi’s Tower has already paved the way for the fighters to join the canon, now it just depends on whether NetherRealm decides to expand Fire God Liu Kang’s new era with the inclusion of Sonya and Kano.

Mortal Kombat 1 is available now for PC, PS5, Switch and Xbox Series X/S.
