MOVIE NEWS – As part of the Realms Deep stream, 3D Realms and Slipgate Ironworks announced the release date for the remaster of Kingpin: Life of Crime. Called Kingpin: Reloaded, the release will be on December 5, 2023.
Kingpin: Life of Crime was originally released in 1999 by Interplay. It was the final game from developer Xatrix Entertainment before most of the crew moved to Activision for a studio called Gray Matter Studios. Xatrix was known for the Redneck Rampage and Cyberia games.
It was largely overshadowed by the more progressive Half-Life, but Kingpin brought some innovations of its own. There were side quests, the Pawn-O-Matic shop system, and a skill system where you started inexperienced with new weapons and gradually improved your accuracy.
The remaster seems to be basically aiming for texture fidelity. Muddy filtered textures have been reworked to look better at higher resolutions. However, the wobble of 3D objects is still there, which I find interesting. That’s not exactly undesirable, and probably the best we can hope for when it comes to a remaster of such a lacking title. I’m just always happy when a game gets updated for modern systems.
