MOVIE NEWS – Season 1 of Ahsoka ended with footage of Anakin Skywalker’s Force Ghost after Sabine Wren had sensed him. It changes everything we know about them. WARNING! This article contains spoilers for episode 8 of Ahsoka.
Season 1 of Ahsoka is now available to stream in its entirety. The final episode left questions about Sabine Wren and whether or not she saw Anakin Skywalker’s Force Ghost. Although Grand Admiral Thrawn has managed to return to the Star Wars galaxy, the story of Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren is still a bit of a hit. Ahsoka was able to overcome her past guilt. And Sabine has successfully opened herself to the use of the Force.
In season 1 of Ahsoka, Sabine’s arc was filled with heartache as she struggled to connect to the Force while searching for her lost family in the person of Ezra Bridger, trapped on Peridea.
Sabine’s Force-sensitivity was hinted at from the very beginning of Ahsoka, though all her efforts failed until episode 8 of Ahsoka. Now that Sabine had opened herself to the Force, she could sense the presence of Anakin Skywalker, who stood guard over her former padawan. The fact that Sabine can sense Anakin, but Ahsoka cannot, maybe one of Ahsoka’s greatest twists. It could affect both characters’ stories in the future.
Sabine can sense Anakin – so Force Ghosts don’t require direct contact?!
Ghosts of the Force is still one of the Star Wars phenomena we don’t fully understand. It is well known that Force ghosts can appear and interact with the living. They can physically influence the world around them. Force ghosts can only appear if they are aligned with the light side of the Force. That is, Sith cannot manifest as Force ghosts – only Jedi with the proper training can. For decades, it was believed that for a Force ghost to manifest, it had to be in contact with the person seeing it. This theory makes sense in the case of a man like Luke Skywalker, who has seen the Force ghosts of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and his father, Anakin Skywalker.
However, in Ahsoka’s final scene, Sabine – who has never met Anakin Skywalker and has no real connection to him – seemed to be able to sense Anakin’s Force ghost.
The revelation about Force ghosts opens up a whole new realm of possibilities for how Anakin Skywalker could be used in Ahsoka season 2 and beyond. While Ahsoka no longer needs his master’s guidance, that doesn’t mean Anakin won’t pop up now and then. Anakin was one of the most powerful Force users in the galaxy’s history, so it makes sense that his spirit could easily manifest anywhere.
Because of the statues of the Mortis Gods seen in Ahsoka 8, Anakin’s connection to them and the Mortis Empire may force him to appear to someone other than Ahsoka Teano. If the Force ghosts do not need direct contact to manifest, then this would not be a problem. Anakin could appear to people like Baylan Skoll or Shin Hati. It would definitely be an exciting extension to the Force Ghost story. It also hints at the possibility of other Jedi appearing in future Star Wars titles, such as Ben Solo in Rey’s new Jedi Order film.
Why can’t Ahsoka feel Anakin’s presence?
There are many reasons why Ahsoka may not have sensed Anakin’s presence. One could be that because Sabine has been so closed off from the Force and is now open to it, everything flows into her. Ahsoka Tano may have sensed her master but felt no need to contact him. She could interpret his presence as his approval of what she had achieved. He didn’t need words to reinforce it.
Ahsoka had also told Sabine earlier in Episode 8 that Anakin had always stood by her and her decisions, and this moment embodied that Anakin would continue to do so.
There is also a precedent in Star Wars for humans learning how to open themselves to the ghosts of the Force. As seen, for example, with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn in the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ahsoka may not be ready to see Anakin Skywalker as a Force ghost. This could be his next journey in Ahsoka season 2. Whether or not Sabine and Ahsoka have actually seen Anakin Skywalker’s Force Ghost, it’s heartwarming to know that he’s still there looking out for his padawan. Her presence signals that viewers may see more of Anakin in future seasons of Ahsoka.
