Cyberpunk 2077: CD Projekt Spent A Lot To Restore It

Without giving specific numbers, CD Projekt RED (CDP) spent 7.88 times as much on quality correction for its first-person adventure game as Nacon spent on the entire development of Daedalic Entertainment’s biggest failure, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum!

CDP confirmed at its Investor Day on October 5 that the Polish company has spent over $120 million on Cyberpunk 2077 since its release, including updates and bug fixes, as well as the development and marketing of the Phantom Liberty DLC. You have spent approximately $40 million on the base game and $84 million on the DLC. The vast majority of this amount represents expenses related to the development of the base game, “which have not yet been amortized,” as well as “expenses related to the preparation of the current-gen update to be released in February 2022,” CDP clarified to Gamesindustry.

According to the CDP report, production costs reached PLN 275 million (about $62.8 million), while the global marketing campaign cost about PLN 95 million ($21 million). In contrast, Kotaku has a more nuanced picture, saying that Cyberpunk 2077 cost $174 million to develop and almost $142 million to market. As we wrote at the beginning, that’s WAY more than Daedalic Entertainment got for arguably the worst game of the year (€15 million, but that’s still about $15.88 million, which is chump change even compared to the DLC).

According to CDP, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 (codenamed Project Orion) is already in the concept stage and is being developed by their North American studio with support from Polish developers. They’ve also teamed up with independent entertainment company Anonymous Content (Mr. Robot, The OA) to create a live-action project based on Studio Trigger’s Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime, so the franchise won’t be ignored by the company, which is currently working on a remake of the first part of The Witcher as well as the fourth.

So there’s a lot of money in the gaming industry…
