We didn’t think even the Mouse Empire would make it onto Gabe Newell’s portable PC…
It’s been revealed on Reddit that some Disneyland employees are apparently using Steam Decks to control the animatronics in the Star Wars area of the theme park (Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge). This is an entirely new approach to the device, which is far from a simple Nintendo Switch clone. Disneyland employees have been clutching white devices to match the Star Wars theme.
But there’s more to the discussion on Reddit, as they’ve noticed something else on the device. They noticed something else on the back of the device. They think it might be a battery extension to keep the Steam Deck running longer. Since it’s a small machine, the battery runs out relatively quickly, and it wouldn’t be logical for workers to keep changing devices, so they’re giving more power to Valve’s product, which by default has 2-8 hours of playtime, so maybe the Steam Deck can last a full (work) day with one battery pack. The other option is some kind of antenna or transmitter to have a stable connection to the droids.
When you leave the game mode of the Steam Deck, you can also switch to the desktop mode. You will need to have a mouse and keyboard connected to your Valve machine to use it for other things. But don’t expect huge performance (it doesn’t have the latest hardware; you’ll have to make do with other companies’ handheld PCs, since Valve admittedly only upgrades hardware when it comes with significantly more performance). But as a last resort, you can use it to write a document when you don’t have a mini PC nearby (if you plan to use it for low-power and office work, it has potential).
We’ve written before about a Ukrainian soldier controlling drones with the Steam Deck… so Valve’s product is being used in a variety of ways around the world.
