Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Technologically, It Has Nothing To Be Ashamed Of [VIDEO]

Insomniac Games has revealed the visual improvement between the first and second main Spider-Man adventures, as Sony’s studio demonstrates the difference between console generations.

Digital Foundry’s analysis can be seen below, and can be considered the technological leader among current-gen games. It shows what the PlayStation 5 can do without making serious sacrifices (no low native resolution in performance mode, no unstable frame rate…). Our earlier fears have also been allayed: compared to the PlayStation 5 remaster of the first installment, the second looks much better than what we’ve seen so far. The New York of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is much denser, has more detailed geometry, uses more materials, has better lighting, and now all graphical modes have ray tracing, which is also improved, as reflections (and even secondary ones) are of better quality. Juxtapose the two and you can see the difference.

Fidelity mode (the option that aims for image quality) ranges from 1440p to 4K (2160p) in dynamic resolution, and mostly maintains 30 FPS (but if you have a 120 Hz display, it’s 40). The native resolution in performance mode varies dynamically between 1080p and 1440p, but compared to 2023 games with native resolutions below 720p, it’s not bad, and very rarely drops from 60 to around 55 FPS. There are also several VRR options. Smoothed limits it to sixty frames per second, Uncapped can bring it up to 65-80 FPS in performance mode, and Fidelity ranges from 45 to 60, but the dynamic resolution range expands so you can drop the native resolution to as low as 936p in performance.

So the performance of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which comes out on PlayStation 5 on October 20, is fair enough, and a pleasant surprise compared to many of the bigger games released this year. And that leaves the question of whether or not there will be a half-generation update… but we’ll come back to that in the news later today, as we’ve heard a rumor regarding one of the console companies.
