MOVIE NEWS – Disney has released the first image of Rachel Zegler playing Snow White with seven CGI dwarves in the live-action remake after an earlier version of the movie caused significant backlash…
In a new image from Disney’s live-action movie Snow White, we can see the titular princess with the dwarfs for the first time. Disney’s upcoming live-action remake reimagines their 1937 animated classic, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The film is directed by Marc Webb and stars Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot.
Now Disney has released the first image for the remake. The first image shows Zegler’s titular princess surrounded by her seven dwarfs. Dwarf characters are CGI rendered and stand and sit around the princess.
Why is Disney’s Snow White remake problematic?
Despite the expectations, the Snow White remake had to face several controversies. Among other things, with the depiction of dwarfs and Zegler’s comments on the classics. Instead of borrowing the title of the original animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney’s upcoming live-action film de-emphasized the dwarf characters by cutting this second part of the title. Then, it was revealed that the Seven Dwarfs would be replaced by seven “magical creatures” in the Snow White remake.
This change was made due to the harmful stereotypes about dwarves that these characters are believed to have perpetuated.
The change to “magical creatures” backfired for Disney. Instead of audiences embracing the supposedly more politically correct change, Disney was criticized for not giving dwarf actors the opportunity to take on the roles of Snow White’s dwarf. Among the seven magical creatures, only one dwarf actor appeared. This meant that Disney, in order to be more sensitive, effectively threw away six potential casting opportunities. The very group that has historically been so poorly represented on the big screen.
With this latest image, Disney seems to have turned away from magical creatures. But this does not change the casting problem of Snow White. After all, a CGI dwarf is not as inclusive a step as the role of an actor living with dwarfism. It seems that Disney is trying to listen to the critical reactions.
With the recent news that Snow White is moving from March 22, 2024, to March 21, 2025, the live-action remake has many months to reinvent itself.
What does the audience have to say about the changes?
Disney recently announced that the live-action Snow White release date will be pushed back a year, but at the same time, it shared a brand new image of Zegler’s Snow White with the dwarfs. Some social media users are celebrating that the characters are now real – “real” – dwarves. This is indeed a significant change from the original intention of not depicting his companions as a homogenous group of dwarves.
We had a hard time getting over the horribly ridiculous appearance of the “magical creatures”, but it is not certain that what happened is really progress.
However, many others criticize the CGI used to bring the characters to life. Twitter – sorry, X – was flooded with disbelieving comments. It is no exaggeration to say that those who have doubted the success of the live-action movie have not been reassured. On the other hand, they managed to shock a significant part of the potential audience with the enormously lame CGI characters. We are eagerly awaiting the developments. What will Disney come up with next… maybe we will see the dwarves in the form of glove puppets or shadow play figures next.
