The acclaimed director and creator of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate spoke highly of Insomniac Games’ recently released Spider-Man 2.
Both Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder have received high praise from critics and fans alike, with Super Mario Bros. Wonder currently receiving higher reviews. Sakurai’s endorsement highlights that the two games are compelling pieces in their own franchises.
The director and creator of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a big fan of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, as evidenced by the praise he’s given the game online. Insomniac Games’ superhero sequel made waves among fans and critics alike, where it quickly became a hit. In addition to high critical scores, the game also became a PS5 record-breaking sales record. Among those praising Spider-Man 2 is esteemed game designer Masahiro Sakurai.
Many Nintendo gamers may be familiar with this name, as he was the director and creator of the Super Smash Bros. series, all the way up to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch. His career is long and bright, although he considers himself “semi-retired”. Recently, the game designer has been posting about his time in the game industry, such as Sakurai showing off rare game collections or giving insight from his time in the industry. However, Sakurai is still an active player where he keeps up with plenty of modern releases. One such title he played was Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man 2, and he had high praise for the game.
What did Sakurai say about Spider-Man 2?
He posted this praise on Twitter, where he commented that he managed to finish both Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder in roughly one night. He noted that it was quite difficult since both Spider-Man 2 and Wonder were released on the same day. Regardless, he states that both games are amazing, calling them both “masterpieces”. Sakurai also states that he can recommend both games to everyone and thanks the developers for making them possible.
“Last night I finished Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. The problem is when the release dates of big titles that are worth paying attention to overlap… But I think both are masterpieces that I can recommend to anyone. The new games are amazing and I thank them for making them.”
– Masahiro Sakurai (roughly translated)
Both the Japanese and English speaking halves of Sakurai’s followers were delighted to hear that both games received equal praise. And other fans were surprised to hear that he cleared both games at roughly the same time and in a short period of time. Since both games were released on October 20th, Sakurai’s tweet mentioning that he beat them was posted on October 23rd, so he managed to beat both titles in 2-3 days. That’s an impressive feat considering how long it takes to beat Spider-Man 2, with a story-only playthrough alone running between 10-15 hours.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Spider-Man 2 have both received high praise from critics and fans alike, with Super Mario Bros. Wonder still holding higher ratings than Insomniac’s title at the time of writing. Both Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder can be considered the best games in the franchises when supported by a designer like Sakurai.
