Could The Successor To The Nintendo Switch Take A Cue From The DS?

A patent might suggest that, but let’s not forget that they don’t always end up using what they patent.

The Nintendo Switch has had great sales (and is still getting great exclusives: most recently, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and next time there’s a good chance that the remake of the Super Mario RPG, originally developed by Square, will be a hit), but the age and technical limitations of the hardware, which was released six and a half years ago, are slowly catching up with it, so the Japanese company will soon have to retire the Switch, or at least get a successor in stores, about which we’ve heard quite a few rumors (including a possible release date and a seemingly silly reservation day)…

GameRant has reported on a new patent filed by Nintendo. The device looks similar to the Nintendo 3DS, or rather the DS series: the hardware has two displays. These are detachable and can communicate with each other wirelessly. A touch screen is also included on the trademarked hardware, and it will be possible to control the console while it is closed.

If the Nintendo Switch 2 (official name still unknown) can really embrace the DS theme, then Nintendo Switch Online will be able to host the best titles from the DS and 3DS catalog. The rumored successor to the Switch will also support Nvidia’s DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction, so it may have better ray tracing capabilities than the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. However, frame generation (smoother frame rate) will not be supported as Nintendo and Nvidia are working on other features that would be better suited for a newer hybrid platform.

The hardware coming after the Nintendo Switch will be released sometime in the next fiscal year. Maybe it will be available from September 24, maybe October, who knows… but we can start getting ready to see its marketing.
