It’s been just over a month since Insomniac Games released Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for PlayStation 5, and we’re already hearing about a rough timeframe for the team’s next game following the story of Peter Parker and his successor Miles Morales (we wrote about that!)…
It was two years ago, in September 2021, that Insomniac Games announced Marvel’s Wolverine at the PlayStation Showcase, which was broadcast at the time. “Back when we were working on Marvel’s Spider-Man, there were times when all of us – Insomniac, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Marvel – would brainstorm together about the future beyond the web-slinger. And even in those early discussions, Wolverine kept coming up as a character we’d really like to work on together. Fast forward a few years and suddenly we’re standing in front of Sony Interactive Entertainment and Marvel formally pitching a PlayStation 5 game starring the adamantium-clawed mutant,” wrote Ryan Schneider, the studio’s head of franchise strategy and studio relations.
Not much is officially known about a standalone X-Men game, but it’s already set in the same universe as Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man creations, so there could be a crossover between the two protagonists in the future. In 2023, Jeff Grubb rumoured that there would be a “broad linear” game with an adult rating and a release date of autumn 2024.
According to the ArtStation profile of concept artist Hung Nguy, Marvel’s Wolverine is due out in 2024. If Insomniac has its way, that would be just one year between the release of two AAA games, and that would be a very strong performance from the Sony-owned studio. However, he also mentioned another game in his profile: the next project from Bend. The new game from the team that last made Days Gone, but were denied permission to continue that IP, is set for release in 2025.
The team had previously been working on The Last of Us: Factions (as we call the multiplayer project) before being given permission to move on. Last June, Bend said it would be a new IP with Days Gone’s open-world systems, as well as a multiplayer mode…
