From Xbox To PlayStation: Bonnie Jean Mah Has Joined The Other Side

Moves are often made within the games industry, but this time a narrative director has made the leap from an old (and now somewhat overshadowed) Microsoft franchise to an equally old but still vibrant Sony IP.

Bonnie Jean Mah announced on Twitter that she’s moved from The Coalition to Sony’s Santa Monica studio. Mah previously worked as a narrative designer on Gears of War 4 and Gears 5, and was promoted to director of narrative for the franchise. She also briefly served as lead writer on Age of Empires IV, and worked on several Microsoft franchises before joining the Sony team. So the Redmond tech giant has lost one of its most important people.

Mah took to Twitter to say that she’s also been offered a position as Narrative Director at Sony Santa Monica and is looking forward to working with the team and the studio, but there’s no word yet on what exactly she’ll be working on, but as his tweet shows him posing next to a statue of Kratos, she could be working on the next God of War. Given how easily the Gears of War 4/Gears 5 pairing could have been glossed over, Mah’s work might be better treated under PlayStation Studios… but she’ll have a hard time living up to Cory Barlog, and she may not be able to, but Mah should be given the chance to surprise audiences.

Sony Santa Monica Studio is working on several projects. One could be a new IP from Cory Barlog, and it’s been sitting on their desk for several years. God of War won’t be forgotten in the short term either, which is why we suspect a third instalment of the Norse story arc is in the works for PlayStation 5 (and could involve Mah), as God of War 2018 and God of War: Ragnarok last year were stellar results for Sony, which has been expanding its games into blockbuster IPs of late.

We wish Mah the best of luck in her new role.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
