TECH NEWS – The Chinese company is also reportedly working on a beefier MR (Mixed Reality = AR+VR) headset, and it will have a more powerful processor and a somewhat surprising cooling system…
Not only Samsung is planning to launch something against Apple’s high-end (and comparatively priced) device, but also Huawei, although we don’t know the specifications of the Chinese product, we only know that it will have a flagship processor, so the Kirin 9000S is certainly out of the picture. Mochamad Farido wrote on Twitter that Huawei could be designing a powerful piece of hardware, which could mean a co-processor, as the Apple Vision Pro uses both a Mac-level M2 and R1 co-CPU.
A lightweight headset is what the company wants, so the battery won’t be in/on it, but connected separately. And Huawei would use a dedicated fan to dissipate heat, which is not very common for such a headset (even Apple’s product doesn’t use such a solution). In another tweet, he mentioned that Huawei’s former sub-brand Honor is also planning an AR headset, but the design and hardware of this one is not very well known. Samsung’s device will have a starting kit of only 30,000 units, so Huawei is unlikely to make more unless there is a significant surge in interest in AR headsets.
In this context, it is worth mentioning Apple: their product, which can be bought for $ 3500, is not expected to be in large stock (you have to buy it in America in their stores, with an appointment), but according to a Chinese site, Jiemian, the company expects about 400 thousand units for the release, which is a huge shipment compared to Samsung (and Huawei?). According to Jiemian, 1 million will be shipped to stores in 2024, and by 2026 (“three years after the launch”) they estimate 10 million. The components and manufacturing cost about $1,700, which explains why Apple is charging so much for it (and that doesn’t even include the prescription lens and other accessories).
The proportion of Chinese components is about 60% (similar to the iPhone 15), and Luxshare is the exclusive assembler of the Apple Vision Pro, of which the second generation model will not be mass produced until 2027, while the cheaper edition could come in 2025 (iPhone chip instead of Mac, lower quality panel). The question is how much demand there will be for these AR headsets.
