Should Silent Hill 2 Remake Stay Faithful To The Original?

Team Silent’s game will be almost impossible for Bloober Team to live up to (as embarrassing as it is to say…), so the Polish studio may not be on the right track by staying very close to the source material of the original game.

After the remakes of Dead Space and Resident Evil (2-3-4…), the second part of Silent Hill is getting a remake. Konami and the Bloober team officially announced this last October (but no release date has been announced since then!), but rumors have been floating around long before that. It’s strange that the second installment is getting a remake and not the first, even though it was only made for the PS1 (maybe Konami thinks they’ve done it all with Silent Hill: Origins…).

Since the release of Silent Hill 2 in 2001, the psychological horror genre has evolved considerably. Bloober Team has some experience in the genre (Layers of Fear, Observer, maybe the forgettable Blair Witch…), but the studio claims to stay true to Team Silent’s core material. Some of the twists and narrative elements will therefore be questionable for the Polish team, as they will have to update the whole thing for a modern audience. In terms of storytelling, Silent Hill 2 was excellent, and the story was fantastic, with some characters/opponents perfectly portraying the mental state and traumas of James, the main character (for example, this is why the iconic pyramid head popped up here and there in Silent Hill…).

One thing is for sure, the Bloober team will have their work cut out for them. Fans have high expectations for the Silent Hill 2 remake. This is a bar that the Poles will not be able to clear, and they will disappoint with their product. Maybe that’s why Valve made the right decision not to start any of their franchises with a number three episode, as neither Half-Life, Team Fortress nor Portal got one.
