As a result, some details about the studio’s next game, Marvel’s Wolverine, have been leaked… This is embarrassing for Sony!
It’s not just a simple attack, so it’s not just a case of Sony’s studio being asked to pay X amount of money and the attackers leaving with the money… because a group called Rhysida has published an image showing confidential information! There are some characters that will appear in Marvel’s Wolverine, but also personal information of employees (even ex-employees!) is revealed, and even Yuri Lowenthal is involved. He voiced Peter Parker in Marvel’s Spider-Man games…
The image even shows some elements of the studio’s internal emails, but since the image is quite blurry, we can’t make much out of it. What is certain, however, is that Rhysida has given Insomniac Games an ultimatum: they have seven days to pay or the full data package will be released. The group is also holding an auction for the data. The starting price was 50 bitcoins, so a minimum of $2 million was the base from which the bidding started. According to Rhysida, “With only 7 days left on the clock, seize the opportunity to bid on exclusive, unique and impressive data. Open your wallets and get ready to buy exclusive data. We only sell to one hand, no reselling; you will be the sole owner!”
Ransomware attacks have become quite common in recent years. They tend to spoil the fun for developers and consumers alike. Sony may end up having to pay for their own data (i.e. they may have to bid for it), otherwise a lot of confidential data could be leaked to unauthorized parties, and even more serious details could be exposed. Just make sure that there is not an unfinished build of Marvel’s Wolverine in the package, but here Sony can make it clear that it can only be started on the developer profile, on the company’s dev kit…
Marvel’s Wolverine is being developed for the PlayStation 5 and will probably be released in the fall of 2024, possibly early 2025. Later there will be a PC port of course, because Sony does not miss a port these days.
